We’re in Westfield most weeks. Our yard is in Rahway, about fifteen minutes up Central Avenue or Rahway Avenue. That means a short travel charge, and a crew that can come back for a second load if the house doesn’t fit on one truck.
Two things, mainly: the houses are big, and a lot of them are old.
The average single-family house in Westfield is around 4,000 square feet, roughly double the national average. A house that size usually means a three- or four-person crew, a full day, and often a separate day for packing. If a mover quotes a Westfield colonial as a quick three-hour job over the phone, be skeptical. That’s the number that goes wrong most often here.
The north side filled in after the train station opened in 1892. The Kimball Avenue Historic District, the town’s only designated one, is almost entirely houses from 1892 to 1925: Colonial Revivals with gambrel roofs, Queen Annes with turrets and wraparound porches, Georgians, Federals. They’re beautiful, and they’re awkward to move out of. Staircases are narrow and turn at the landing, plaster marks if you brush it, and a finished third floor means every heavy piece comes down two flights instead of one.
What we do about it: walk the carry route before anything is lifted, pad the banister and the door casings, and take apart upstairs whatever won’t make the turn. It adds twenty minutes at the start and saves an hour and a repair bill later.
Where you are in town matters less than the age of the house. Wychwood, The Gardens, Indian Forest, Stonehenge, Manor Park, Brightwood, Stoneleigh Park, Country Club Estates: the quote follows the house, not the neighborhood. A 1910 Colonial Revival off Kimball Avenue and a 1990s rebuild near Tamaques Park need different crews even at the same square footage.

The bottom row is the one people underestimate. A large house with full packing can be one long day or three: packing one day, loading the next, delivery when the new house is ready. We’d rather tell you that at the estimate than have a crew still working at nine at night.
Westfield is easy to reach and awkward to park in. The main roads are Route 28 (South Avenue on the west side, looping round to North Avenue at the station circle), East and West Broad Street through downtown, Central Avenue, Mountain Avenue, Rahway Avenue and Lamberts Mill Road. Most of the residential streets off them are fine for a 26-foot truck. A few of the older blocks near the station are tight enough that we park a larger truck on the avenue and shuttle with a smaller one.
Overnight street parking is restricted in Westfield, and the town issues temporary “night owl” permits through Parking Services for exceptions. We don’t leave a truck on your street the night before. The crew arrives in the morning, and if your block needs cones or a temporary no-parking arrangement, we set that up with you during the estimate, not on the day.
Most of our Westfield work stays in New Jersey: trading up within town, downsizing to Cranford or Garwood, or following a job across the state.
