Our headquarters is in Rahway — about six miles and fifteen minutes from the centre of Westfield, usually up Central Avenue or Rahway Avenue. We work in the town most weeks, from the blocks around Mindowaskin Park and the train station out to the Mountainside and Scotch Plains lines, and Westfield jobs do not look like the rest of Union County's.

In practice that means a bigger crew, a longer day, and more often than not a job that does not fit into a single day at all. It is the main reason a Westfield quote looks different from a quote two towns over, and the main reason an over-the-phone guess goes wrong here.

The bottom row is the one people underestimate. Some 1,000-plus jobs go in one long day; plenty do not. The largest Westfield job we have handled took two trucks, five movers and about $1,600 of packing materials, split across three days — packing on the Monday, loading on the Tuesday, delivery the following weekend. Quoting a house that size as a single day when it is not is how people end up with a crew still working at nine at night and a bill nobody expected.
Westfield's north side filled in after the railway station opened in 1892, and the Kimball Avenue Historic District — the town's only designated one — is almost entirely houses built between 1892 and 1925. Colonial Revivals with gambrel roofs, Queen Anne Victorians with turrets and wraparound porches, Georgians, Federals.
They are beautiful and they are awkward to move out of. Staircases are narrow and turn at the landing. Plaster marks if you brush it. Pocket doors, original banisters and leaded glass are all things you only notice when something catches them. A wraparound porch looks generous until you are carrying an armoire around one, and a finished third floor means every heavy item goes down two flights rather than one.
So on those houses we walk the route out before anything is lifted, pad the banister and the door casings rather than trusting a careful grip, and take apart what has to come apart upstairs instead of finding out at the turn. It adds twenty minutes at the start and saves an hour and a repair bill later.
Whichever section of town you are in — Wychwood, The Gardens, Indian Forest, Stonehenge, Manor Park, Brightwood, Stoneleigh Park or Country Club Estates — the quote follows the house, not the name. What changes the plan is age and layout: a 1910 Colonial Revival off Kimball Avenue and a 1990s rebuild near Tamaques Park need different crews even at the same square footage.
Westfield is easy to reach and awkward to park in. The main roads are Route 28 — South Avenue on the west side, looping round to North Avenue at the station circle — plus East and West Broad Street through downtown, Central Avenue, Mountain Avenue, Rahway Avenue and Lamberts Mill Road. Most of the residential streets off them are tree-lined and comfortable for a 26-foot truck; a few of the older blocks near the station are tight enough that we shuttle from a larger truck parked on the avenue.
Overnight on-street parking is restricted in Westfield, and the town issues temporary “night owl” permits through Parking Services for exceptions. We do not stage a truck on your street the night before a move; the crew arrives in the morning, and if your block needs cones or a temporary no-parking arrangement we sort that with you in the survey rather than on the day.
Most of the Westfield work we do stays in New Jersey — trading up within town, downsizing to Cranford or Garwood, or following a job across the state. Mountainside, New Providence, Harrison and Wall Township have all been destinations for us this year.
The other pattern is moving from New Jersey to Florida. We run that route constantly and we are one of very few movers on it with our own crews at both ends: our headquarters here and our Florida branch in Sunrise, just west of Fort Lauderdale. There is no handoff to a partner carrier in the middle.
Local moves are priced by the hour: $40 per mover per hour plus $75 for the truck. A three-person crew with a truck is $195 an hour, four is $235. We bill a three-hour minimum plus an hour of travel, which puts the practical floor at about $800.
