Local and long-distance movers for Berkeley Heights, New Jersey (07922): big 1950s and ’60s houses, eleven weight-limited streets, and a wave of new apartment buildings. Our own crews out of Rahway, no brokers.
Berkeley Heights is about 25 minutes from our Rahway yard, close enough that you’re not paying for an hour of highway before the crew starts. The houses here are among the largest we move in Union County, and the township has a few rules about trucks that are worth knowing before the day.
Four bedrooms is the most common house size here, and most homes have four or more. That makes a Berkeley Heights move bigger than the county average, and it’s why a quote built from a bedroom count goes wrong more often here than elsewhere. Two four-bedroom houses on the same street can differ by several hundred cubic feet. We quote from what’s in the house.
Just over half the township was built between 1950 and 1969, when Bell Labs brought people in. That era left Cape Cods, split-levels and ranches, plus larger colonials, and each one is a different problem on move day:

Many residential streets here have heavy tree cover. A 26-foot box truck is about 13 feet tall, and on some streets the overhang decides where the truck can safely stand, which decides how long the carry is. A photo of your street sent with the estimate request helps us plan it.
The other kind of Berkeley Heights move is new. The township is adding well over a thousand apartments in the next decade, at Clarus, Modera, RT500/RT600, The Carriages, Berkeley Crossing II and The Terrace among others. Moving into one of those is a building move: a certificate of insurance for the building, a booked elevator window, a loading dock instead of a driveway. Ask the building manager for the COI requirements early. The paperwork takes days, not hours.

Township code § 10.20.010 keeps trucks over four tons off eleven streets, “except for the pickup and delivery of materials.” A moving truck loading or unloading at an address on one of these streets is covered by that exception. A truck cutting through is not. The streets:
Berkeley Heights has no township-wide overnight parking ban of the kind Summit and Cranford have. Restrictions are set street by street, mostly school-hour and commuter rules, so the sign on your own street is the one that counts. A storage container or POD left in the roadway is different: that falls under the township’s right-of-way obstruction permits (Chapter 12.30), so call the township before it’s delivered.

| The job | Volume | Crew | Time on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller home, partial packing | 300–400 cu ft | 2–3 movers | About 3 hours |
| Family home, no packing | 600–900 cu ft | 3 movers | About 6 hours |
| Family home, full packing | 600–900 cu ft | 3 movers | About 10 hours |
| Large house | 1,000+ cu ft | 4–5 movers | One long day, or split across two |
Berkeley Heights sits at the heavier end of that table more often than the lighter end. A full house here is a long day for a four-person crew, and with full packing it’s usually two.
Neighbouring towns we cover on the same terms: Summit, one stop up the Gladstone Branch, New Providence next door, and Westfield and Scotch Plains to the south. Long-distance moves out of Berkeley Heights, most often to Florida, load with our own crew and deliver with our own Florida branch in Sunrise. Our New Jersey movers page covers everything that applies statewide, and we also handle packing and storage.
Local moves are billed by the hour, by crew size. A three-person crew with a truck is $190 an hour, a four-person crew is $225. There’s a four-hour minimum that includes travel time, so the smallest job comes to about $800.
Worked example: a three-person crew for a three-hour move is billed as four hours (three on site plus the travel hour), and four hours at $190 is $760. Packing materials, if we pack, are added on top.
Because the typical house here is a four-bedroom, most Berkeley Heights jobs run well past the minimum. A full house is a long day for a four-person crew; with full packing it’s usually two days.
Packing materials and crating are separate. You get the estimate in writing before move day, and if you want the number locked in, ask for a binding estimate. Our guide to binding and non-binding estimates explains what each one commits us to.

Michael W. · Google review, Sep 2025Yes, when it’s picking up or delivering at an address on that street. Township code § 10.20.010 keeps trucks over four tons off eleven named streets “except for the pickup and delivery of materials.” A truck using the street as a through route isn’t covered.
Not for a daytime load at the curb. Parking restrictions here are set street by street rather than township-wide, so the posted sign on your street governs. A container or POD left standing in the roadway is different: that needs a right-of-way obstruction permit from the township, so call before it’s delivered.
There’s no township-wide overnight ban of the kind Summit and Cranford have. Restrictions are street-specific, mostly school-hour and commuter rules.
Local moves are $190 an hour for a three-person crew with a truck, with a four-hour minimum that includes travel time, so the smallest job is about $800. Because the typical Berkeley Heights house is a four-bedroom, most jobs here run well past that.
A family home with no packing is normally three movers and about six hours. The same house with full packing runs closer to ten. Above 1,000 cubic feet it’s four to five movers and either one long day or two.
The newer rental buildings in the township generally do, and many ask for specific limits and additional-insured wording. Ask the building manager at the estimate stage. The paperwork takes days, and a missing certificate is the most common reason a delivery gets turned away at the door.
Yes. Expedite Moving, Inc. is registered with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, Reg. #39PC00116900, and holds USDOT 2491702. If your building or your buyer’s attorney needs a certificate of insurance, ask us and we’ll send one before the day.
Tell us the address, the date and roughly what is going. If your street is one of the eleven, or has heavy tree cover, say so. The estimate is in writing before the day.
