Movers for Apartments, Walk-Ups and High-Rises in New York

From walk-ups to luxury high-rises, our movers are equipped for the realities of moving in New York City.

Apartment & Walk-Up Moves

Tight staircases, narrow hallways, and multiple flights are common in NYC. Our movers are experienced with walk-ups and older buildings, using the right techniques to move efficiently without damage.

High-Rise & Luxury Building Moves

We regularly move clients in luxury high-rises and doorman buildings. Our team coordinates with building management, follows elevator reservations, and protects common areas to meet strict building requirements.

Condo & Co-Op Moves

Condo and co-op buildings often have detailed move rules and paperwork. We’re familiar with COI requirements, move windows, and building protocols so your move stays smooth and approved.

Studio & Small Moves

Not every move is a full apartment. Whether you’re moving a studio, a single room, or just a few large items, we offer flexible options tailored to smaller NYC moves.

Movers in New York: What a Local Move Costs

The rate card

  • $50 per mover, per hour, plus a $45 truck fee
  • Three-person crew — $195/hr. Four-person crew — $245/hr
  • Four-hour minimum that includes travel time
  • Practical floor of about $800 once the minimum, travel and materials are counted

What changes the number, in roughly the order it matters:

  • How full the apartment is, not how many bedrooms it has. Two one-bedrooms on the same floor can differ by several hundred cubic feet.
  • Stairs and walk-ups. A fourth-floor walk-up in Park Slope is a different job from a fourth floor with a service elevator, at the same volume.
  • Where the truck can legally stand, and how far the carry is from there to the door.
  • Building requirements — a certificate of insurance and a booked elevator window, covered below.
  • Packing — full, partial, or you pack and we load. This is the single biggest lever on the total.

What a move of a given size usually takes, from jobs we have completed:

Shape of the jobVolumeCrew and time
Studio or small one-bedroom, partial packing300–400 cu ft2–3 movers, about 3 hours
Family home or large apartment, no packing600–900 cu ft3 movers, about 6 hours
Same, with full packing600–900 cu ft3 movers, about 10 hours
Large house1,000+ cu ft4–5 movers, one long day or split across two

These are planning ranges, not a quote. We give a written estimate once we know what is going and what the access looks like at both ends.

Movers for Long-Distance Moves Out of Brooklyn and New York

Most people searching for a mover in Brooklyn are not moving to the next neighbourhood. They are leaving — and a long-distance move is a different product from a local one, priced a different way.

Long-distance is quoted on the volume of your shipment, not by the hour. The hourly rate card above applies to local work inside New York. A move to Florida, the Carolinas or anywhere past a few hours' drive is quoted on cubic feet plus the access at both ends, and you should expect a written estimate after we have seen what is going — not a number over the phone.

Why the far end matters as much as the near end

The part of a long move that goes wrong is almost never the highway. It is the delivery: a building that needs a certificate of insurance nobody asked for, an elevator that was never booked, a street the truck cannot stand on. We run our own crews out of three places — Brooklyn (3206 Avenue R, Marine Park), our Rahway, New Jersey headquarters, and a branch in Sunrise, Florida — which covers both ends of the two lanes New Yorkers ask about most.

  • New York to New Jersey. The shortest of the long moves and the one people most often underestimate, because it crosses a state line and stops being an hourly job.
  • New York to Florida. Our Sunrise branch is the delivery end. See how the New Jersey to Florida route works — the New York version runs the same way.
  • Inbound from New England. We cover Boston to New Jersey in detail, including what a Boston moving-truck permit costs.

Full detail on pricing, timing and what to ask any interstate mover is on our long-distance moving page. Tell us the origin, the destination and roughly what is going, and we will confirm what we can take on.

Movers in New York Must Hold State Authority — What That Gives You

A detail worth knowing before you book anyone, because it is the fastest way to separate a real moving company from a van with a website.

The authority comes from the state, not the city

For moves within New York — including moves entirely inside the five boroughs — the licence to carry household goods is issued by the New York State Department of Transportation. New York City's own business portal is explicit that NYSDOT issues it; the City does not run a separate moving licence of its own.

Ours is NY State DOT #T-39418. Our federal number, for moves that cross a state line, is USDOT 2491702.

Ask any mover for their T-number before you pay a deposit. NYSDOT also publishes a summary booklet for people shipping household goods — a mover who cannot tell you it exists is a mover to be careful with.

If your move crosses a state line, you get two liability options

Federal rules require an interstate mover to offer both, and the default is weaker than most people assume:

OptionWhat it meansCost
Released Value ProtectionThe mover is liable for 60 cents per pound per article. A 40-pound television is covered for $24, whatever it cost.No additional charge
Full Value ProtectionThe mover is responsible for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods, and will repair, replace or settle in cash.Costs extra

Released Value is free, and free is why people end up with it without quite choosing it. Read the valuation section before you initial it.

Movers in New York: Frequently Asked Questions

How much do movers cost in New York City?

Local moves in New York City are typically billed by the hour, based on the size of your crew and truck. NYC-specific factors can affect the time and cost too, such as walk-up flights, elevator reservations, and building COI requirements. Expedite Moving gives you a free, itemized quote up front so you know what to expect before moving day.

What areas of New York do you serve?

Expedite Moving operates from a Brooklyn office and serves all five NYC boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — along with Westchester County and Nassau County. We pick up across that service area and can move you to any destination in New York State. For moves leaving New York, we provide long-distance service as well.

Do you handle co-op, condo, and doorman building moves in New York City?

Yes. Our New York movers regularly work in co-ops, condos, and doorman buildings. We handle Certificate of Insurance (COI) paperwork, coordinate with building management, follow assigned move windows, and reserve freight elevators so your move meets building requirements and stays on schedule.

Are moving companies required to be licensed in New York?

Yes. Movers operating in New York must be licensed by the New York State Department of Transportation. Expedite Moving is fully licensed and insured under NY DOT #T-39418, which protects your belongings and gives you real recourse if anything goes wrong.

How far in advance should I book a New York mover?

For most New York moves, booking two to four weeks ahead is enough to secure your preferred date, and earlier during summer, weekends, or the end of the month. In New York City it also helps to book early so we can arrange any building COI and elevator reservations your building requires.

Do your New York movers offer packing services?

Yes. Expedite Moving offers full or partial packing, professional-grade packing materials, and furniture disassembly and reassembly. You can have our crew pack your entire home or just the fragile and bulky items, depending on what you need.
