Local and long-distance movers based in Rahway, New Jersey (07065). Our office and truck yard are on Lawrence Street. Our own crews, no brokers.
We know Rahway because we’re located here. The trucks leave from Lawrence Street every morning, the crews drive these streets every day, and a move inside the city starts with the truck a few minutes from your door. That’s the difference between a mover who’s based here and one who lists Rahway as one of fifty service-area towns.
Rahway is two towns in one. About half the homes are owner-occupied houses, most of them built in the 1940s and ’50s, with a good number of two-family houses mixed in. The other half are rentals, and a large share of those are in bigger buildings downtown near the train station: Meridia Brownstones on the old Wheatena site, Carriage City Plaza by the station plaza, and the others going up around them. The two kinds of move need different plans.
A full single-family house here is usually a three- or four-person crew for most of a day. One floor of a two-family is often decided less by how much furniture there is than by a shared entry and an interior stair. We look at both on the walkthrough, and that’s what sets the crew size, not the bedroom count.
Some Rahway houses sit near the river and its branches. If a basement is part of your move, tell us. Basement access is one of the things that changes how long a job takes, and if the lower level is staying behind for a while, we run storage out of the yard on Lawrence Street.

A move into or out of one of the buildings near the station is shaped by the building’s rules more than by the size of the apartment:

Three city ordinances matter on moving day. Most moving companies based outside the city don’t mention them.
City code § 401-19A says there shall be no parking on Rahway streets “by buses and trucks between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.” The exemption in § 401-19D covers only trucks under two tons unloaded weight, and a moving box truck is well over that. Police can have a truck removed at the owner’s expense.
In practice: on a two-day move, a loaded truck can’t stay parked on your street overnight. Ours goes back to the yard on Lawrence Street and comes back in the morning. Rented trucks and out-of-town movers have to solve that problem somewhere else.
Under § 401-16, trucks over the listed weights are excluded from the streets in Schedule XI (§ 401-70) “except for the pickup and delivery of materials on such streets.” The schedule runs to roughly a hundred street segments with a four-ton limit, including West Lake Avenue, Linden Avenue, Whittier Street and Ridge Road along their entire length, Main Street from East Hazelwood Avenue to Mill Street, and Lawrence Street from Routes 1&9 to East Hazelwood Avenue.
If you live on one of those streets, a moving truck can still load at your door. What it can’t do is use the street as a shortcut on the way somewhere else, which is why the crew’s route in and out may not be the one your GPS picks.
The City’s Code Enforcement FAQ says a dumpster permit is required only if the dumpster will sit in the street, and the permit goes through Code Enforcement. We didn’t find a Rahway rule written specifically for portable storage containers or PODs. If you plan to leave one in the roadway rather than the driveway, call Code Enforcement before it’s delivered.

| The job | Crew | Time on site | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apartment or one floor of a two-family | 3 movers | About 3–4 hours | Often close to the four-hour minimum |
| Downtown building with an elevator window | 3 movers | 3–5 hours | Scheduled around the building’s slot |
| Older single-family house | 3–4 movers | Most of a day | Add time for a basement or a third floor |
| Full house with packing | 4 movers | Two days | Packing one day, loading the next |
Inside the city, to the towns next door, and across the state. Clark and Cranford are a few minutes up the river, Westfield and Scotch Plains a little further. We also run New Jersey to Florida constantly, with our own crews at both ends: the yard here and our Florida branch in Sunrise, just west of Fort Lauderdale. Our New Jersey movers page covers everything that applies statewide, and our office details, hours and directions are on the Rahway headquarters page.
Local moves are billed by the hour, by crew size. A three-person crew with a truck is $190 an hour, a four-person crew is $225. There’s a four-hour minimum that includes travel time, so the smallest job comes to about $800.
Worked example: a three-person crew for a three-hour move is billed as four hours (three on site plus the travel hour), and four hours at $190 is $760. Packing materials, if we pack, are added on top.
Because the yard is in Rahway, a move inside the city carries the shortest travel leg we have. A small apartment or one floor of a two-family often lands close to the minimum; a full house runs most of a day and goes up from there with packing, a basement or a third floor.
Packing materials and crating are separate. You get the estimate in writing before move day, and if you want the number locked in, ask for a binding estimate. Our guide to binding and non-binding estimates explains what each one commits us to.
We have 590 Google reviews on our Rahway profile, averaging 4.4 stars. Four of them, quoted as written. The rest are on our testimonials page and on Google.

Local moves are $190 an hour for a three-person crew with a truck, with a four-hour minimum that includes travel time, so the smallest job is about $800. A small apartment or one floor of a two-family often lands close to that. A full house runs most of a day, and every move is quoted on its inventory.
No. Rahway code § 401-19 bars trucks from parking on city streets between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and the only exemption is for trucks under two tons unloaded weight. On a two-day move, our truck goes back to our Rahway yard overnight.
Yes, when it’s picking up or delivering at an address on that street. Rahway code § 401-16 excludes heavier trucks from the streets in Schedule XI “except for the pickup and delivery of materials on such streets.” It doesn’t allow using those streets as a through route.
For a dumpster, yes, if it will sit in the street rather than on your property. The permit goes through the City’s Code Enforcement office. We found no Rahway rule written specifically for PODs or portable storage containers, so call Code Enforcement before one is placed in the roadway.
Yes. We move Rahway households to New York City and further afield. See our long-distance moving page for how out-of-state moves are priced.
